New selection method

I do not understand the reasoning behind the multi select tool being changed from the industry standard drag a box to a non industry standard drag a little square.   Why??

It's a bit hard to tell what's going on - can you provide a screencast of what you are seeing?  One thing to check:  Have you changed the selection type here:

Also, notice that there are hotkeys for changing this from Window selection (1) to Freeform selection (2), to Paint selection (3).  Could you have inadvertently changed the type by hitting one of these hotkeys?

Yes that is it.

It has been a few weeks since I used F360, that looks like a new addition.  I suppose it defaulted to a different selection method, as I hadn't changed it that I know of.

It looks like you ended up in "paint selection" mode.  The default has not been changed - it is still Window selection.  My guess is that you somehow inadvertently hit a "3" that dropped you into paint selection mode.  Either select "Window selection" from that dropdown, or just hitting a "1" should put you back.
