Need help with free form object

Hey guys, so I'm working on the back end of the needler from Halo and running into a little bit of trouble. Right in the beginning portion of the back end im trying to get the edges to come out square but when finishing the faces it automatically curves them. Does anyone know how to fix this?Screen Shot 2016-08-17 at 2.32.53 AM.png

Have you tried selecting the edges and creasing them?

Hi @Anonymous,

You have a couple options for sharper transitions:  For very sharp transition you can use the crease edge tool.  For tighter but smooth edges you can use bevel or insert edge to put a new edge closer to an existing one.

These are great suggestions.

Just out of curiosity do you feel it's better to do soft edges (fillets) in the T-Spline patch rather then in the patch or solid tools?

The reason I ask is sometimes adding all those extra loops causes performance issues in T-Splines and I have found (Not really relevant in this case) but it becomes to hard to control CAD accuracy because of surface tension.

In my practice it really depends on how "exact" my edge transitions need to be.  In the case where I need exact control over the edge transition I will crease the edge and then use the fillet tool in Model or Patch.  If I'm not concerned about precise control of the transition edge then I use Sculpt tools to achieve it.

Hope that helps,

Colin

I know people who use Fusion for game asset design and use the solid modeling tools and less T-Splines specifically when it is hard surfacing and more linear in shape.

Because of the timeline you can then mix this also perfectly with T-Splines!

Yea last night I tried using the crease tool on that outer edge but it didn't work. I'll keep attempting to get the desired look. Maybe I was performing the function incorrectly.

If you want a consistent radius on an object that is not a simple cube or box you basically always have to use crease and a solid radius, or you start fiddling around with individual edges.

The reason for that is that Fusion 360 cannot insert equidistant edges, meaning an edge that has an equal distance from another edge regardless of the shape of the object.

In Fusion 360 edge loops are always proportional.

I added an idea to add equidistant edges almost  a year ago.

Thanks so much I've been tinkering around with the model and finally got it. In the first picture I ended up picking the loop and creasing the edge but found it was still curving like the first picture posted in the thread so I ended up extruding the faces inward and than selecting the edges corresponding with the picture and got the desired look.

You may want to take care of all those yellow and red highlighted icons in the timeline and fix the associated errors.

@TrippyLighting@colin.smith So, I ended up cleaning the timeline up but notice with the form there seems to be some sort of artifacts under the faces near the front? Is that normal?
