NEED HELP DESIGNING A AIRCRAFT WING (NON-PLANAR) SPLIT MOLD

Hello Fusion Community,

I have been struggling with this for some time now. I am attempting to make a split mold for a wing but I am stumpted as to how to form my parting plane for a non-planar wing. I know this may be an unusual post but I would greatly appreciated if anyone had some thoughts. In solid works there is a "mold-tools" section which has a function that will generate a parting plane based on the components natural parting line. Does fusion do something similar?

Thanks all! See attached model file.

The curvature on that edge is absolutely terrible.

I should have checked that before my failed attempt 😕

not quite sure how to respond to that..

Unfortunately, I did not save my model, otherwise, I'd have attached it.

I used the edges of the wing object, ruled surfaces, and a patch all stiched together to create a splitting surface.

Once you have a splitting surface you can then extrude a solid block, combine-cut the wing from it and then use the splitting surface to split the block. Then you have the two mold halves.

Or you can first split the block and then combine-cut the wing from each half separately.

Either way returns an error message that indicates a problem with the geometry.

I then checked the curvature of the S-curved edge of the wing you can see in my last post. I suspect the curvature of those edges is what creates the problem. Some tools in Fusion 360 are very sensitive to curvature problems.

Can you Attach your *.sldprt example?

1. Where is the Timeline History for this design?  Did you create it in Fusion 360?

2. The geometry appears to be poor quality.  Can you ask your instructor to join this discussion?

3.  The proper name is SOLIDWORKS, not solid works.   I doubt that SOLIDWORKS has a tool that will "automagically" create a parting line for this geometry.

I think it will be necessary to go back to the foundations of modeling high quality geometry.

@TheCADWhisperer See the attached links re splitting via parting line in SOLIDWORKS*

@TheCADWhisperer also this wasn't assigned by a professor this is my own project.

What specifically is "poor quality" regarding the geometry?

Why are you sending me links to SOLIDWORKS videos that do not show your part?

I am Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional (CSWP) since 2007.

I teach my students how to create core/cavity molds in SOLIDWORKS from high quality geometry.

We never work without a parametric history.

What is the source of your geometry?

You will need to redesign with Capture Design History turned on.

This is not a beginner level project.

The screenshot I posted earlier in this thread shows completely broken curvature on one of the main edges.

@TrippyLighting Understood. I did not model the geometry seen above. Ill model a replica to solve the broken edge issues.

@TheCADWhisperer I didn't model the geometry seen above its downloaded, so I do not have the parametric history. Though I will after I recreate the geometry for myself. I sent the links as you made a comment doubting that a tool could locate the parting line based on the draft direction of a component, isn't that exactly what happening in both listed links?

Sometimes my playful sarcasm might be a little too subtle to recognize the humor.

SolidWorks is not going to create anything useful from that geometry. 🤔
