I'm currently designing a theatre lighting control surface. This is the first thing I've made in Fusion 360. I've managed to model my current design, and it's awesome to be able to see it in 3D. Now I want to make a few modifications, and I'm stuck on what's the best workflow.

I built the keyboard layout of the device in keyboard-layout-editor.com, and used builder.swillkb.com to produce a DXF file of the keyboard plate. Then in Fusion, I used rigid joints to position the keys on the plate — for each rectangular section of keys, I jointed one key, then used rectangular pattern to place the others. Thus there are 23 joints that keep the keys in place. (This made Fusion rather slow btw, I don't think it likes drawing >100 Cherry keyswitch models.)

Now I want to modify the keyboard layout. If I go back to keyboard-layout-editor, I'd have to download a new plate, and do all that jointing again… which took me ages.

So I'd ideally like to modify the layout in Fusion. To do that, I need a grid with spacing 4.7625mm, with all the current key-holes lined up to the grid. Question 1: how do I make a grid that lines up with features on an imported object?

But my keyboard plate wasn't built in Fusion, so doesn't have an associated sketch… Question 2: how best should I un-extrude the holes I already have, and create a sketch that lets me make new holes in the right place? Or is this a terrible idea? I could make a new sketch, project all the holes, then re-extrude everything that's already there from the new Fusion sketch… but then I'd have to set up all the joints again, and as I mentioned, that'd take me ages!

I also have a slightly related question… Question 3: I haven't actually lined up my key switches correctly for their joints. They sit slightly off-centre. If I go back to the original keyswitch file and move the point that I jointed from, then refresh it in the main assembly file, will all the switches move into place? Or will that only happen if I re-create all the joints?

Has nobody got any tips on how to iterate on a design in 3D?

The short answer is that you can use the joints in the Assemble menu to join a key (or whatever else) to a sketch point.
