'Move' does not works in sketch... How to move a line or a curve sketching ?

Hi,

Maybe it is my beginner experience lack, but I go crazy with the Move fonction.

Here is its normal behavior (in the manual) :
http://fusion360.autodesk.com/learning/learning.html?guid=GUID-FFD25CD3-0707-429E-B0E6-B7F9984CDC4C

BUT even if while sketching I can select a line and right click to chose 'Move' button, then the Move bow appears, then I can use the manipulator and drag it (the manipulator moves but not the line) and when I click OK in the Move box nothing moves. Nothing.

Please, what is my mistake ?

See you soon,
Guy

It should work, is the line projected or fixed in some way. If you right click on the line does it have Break Link on the menu. Can you attach a screen shot. One other thought is it an imported SVG.

Mark

Edit Changed Break Line to Break Link.

As a quick test just draw a line then just try clicking on it and dragging.

Hi @CapGuy,

Going off of what @HughesTooling, it probably is really dependent on your sketch. I am curious to see if the lines are fixed or constrained in any way that would prohibit them from being able to be moved. Screenshots of your sketch (while it is being edited) would be really helpful.

Thanks,

Hi all,

So my first screencast (what a tool !) as a little video is better than a drawing, which is better than speech... Mainly if the speech is within my poor English speaking ! 😉

Hoping this will help you to help me ! O:-)

Cordially,

Guy

The problem is that the bottom point of the line has an implicit coincident constraint with the origin point. That's indicated by the little blue square that appears when you were creating the line and hovered over the origin point.

Try finishing the line just short of the origin point and you should be able to move it.

The reason you can't move the line in the screencast is because you snapped one end to the origin. If you right click the line there is an option delete coincident to delete the constraint, then the line will move.

Hi @CapGuy,

To expand on what @fulcrumusa said, when you selected the origin, you will notice that a rectangular box goes around your cursor indicating that it will create a constraint there. One way to get a better idea of constraints and fully-defined sketches is to turn on one of our preview capabilities. To do this, go into the Preferences (click your name in the top-right of Fusion) and then go to the Preview tab once in the preferences. Then turn on Sketch - Color sketch geometry based on constraint status. You will notice that when you recreate this line (where you snap to the origing) that the line turns from blue to black indicating that it is defined. If you then right-click the point on the origin and select "Delete Coincident Constraint" it will then turn blue again and you can use the move command. Hope this helps!

@James.Youmatz Corrent me if I am wrong but I think that even with the Preferences option turned on, the line will remain blue because the top end of the line is not contrained. In other words, while the bottom end of the line is contrained to the origin point, the line can still be of arbitrary length. Therefore, it's not fully contrained.

Hi @fulcrumusa,

Ah you are right! I was using a pre-made sketch on my screen where the top of the line was constrained. My apologies and good catch! Same concept however with the fully defined sketches. It can be really useful for determining how your sketch will operate.

It shouldn't change colour but it does and you can drag the undefined end point. Most cad systems I've used use 3 colours one colour for undefined one colour if length but not position is defined or position is defined but not length and one colour for fully defined.

Hi all,

@HughesTooling : thanks so much, this is the solution (without re-drawing anything)
@fulcrumusa : Thanks a lot also, but drawing 'short' of the origin is not what I need, but thanks, your message helped me to understand what happened
@James.Youmatz : thank you also, but you know as a beginner I prefer not to switch on the preview functionnalities, because the things are enough difficult form me when the software is in its stable state...
Anyway, thank you very much to all, you helped me as well as it was possible 😄

For helping others, I put a little screencast showing the solution :
