Modeling over an object

Sorry for the messy headline. I have a coffee grinder and I want to 3d print some assembly on it. It needs to be accurate, so I modeled the grinder as a component, as it has some very simple geometry, and modeled my parts on top of it as other components. However I do feel that there is probably a better way to do it. How would one approach that mission?

Please attach your model that you are working with.  If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section of a forum post to attach it.
