Mesh Quality

From what I have read, the three main aspects of a good mesh are:

1) Aspect Ratio

2) Skewness

3) Smoothness (change in size)

 

Question:

I found mesh statistics in the output log from a simulation solve (see attached), but does Fusion have a tool to determine the overall quality as well as the quality in each of these aspects?  The output log just gives me a number, but doesn't give it any scale to a "good" mesh.

Hi @SlawsonEngineering, Fusion doesn't currently have a tool that inspects the quality of the mesh.  I have a decent background in simulation and that does sound like a pretty nice feature.  Could you add it to the Idea Station?  I'll put a vote in for that!

Currently the best thing to do is give a visual inspection of the mesh and if you have any concerns clone the study and refine the mesh to ensure results don't change as the mesh gets finer.  We do have the automatic mesh refinement tool that can help achieve mesh independence.  That said, I think your idea is much better.

Thanks!  Are you aware of any training material that does a deep dive?  I have yet to find any.

Hey @SlawsonEngineering, no problem.  Things are definitely coming together and we are constantly adding content into the help.  There are really 4 pillars:

 

  • Concepts - that walk through conceptual details either by analysis type or in the general analysis section if the material applies to multiple analysis types (like meshing).
  • How to -  these generally describe the workflow and interactions with the interface to complete tasks.
  • Hands on Exercises - Tutorials, currently only 1 per analysis type (we would like to add more and it is planned to do so).
  • Reference - This holds information about specific dialog boxes and has some FAQ's (I believe the FAQ's are in need of some touch up they predate my arrival to writing the fusion help).

 

As far as other resources that provide a lot more depth, I'm not too sure if anything is out yet.  The Simulation Workspace was overhauled in November, and I don't know if there has been anything published since then.  You can take a look at some of the things from our Learning Partners, but I would warn you that as far as their simulation content it may be outdated.  I have personally worked with Ascent to create a book for Autodesk CFD (my longtime specialty) and they do good work.  It is usually very well written with a lot of detail, that said I think the one that is available predates the NASTRAN simulation changes.

Yes that helps.  I understand this content can take time to generate.  I am coming from about ten years of Ansys experience, and all of the concepts (science) are obviously the same, but some of the vocabulary is different (shape ratios vs. ?).  I need a translator haha.  

 

I am confident Autodesk will make this easy to use and simple to understand.  I have also been using Creo for ten years and I am constantly blown away at the quality of program Fusion has become.  You guys really are providing amazing content for the "little guys".   It really is leading edge stuff and I hope it continues to grow, because if it does, it will dominate!
