Mesh editing performance optimization

Testing Fusion on my laptop for rev engineering some elements (first case eyewear, next nautical propeller).

 

Noticed the system is very slow, using just 1 of the thread of my CPU (2 core 4 thread available) for saving on the cloud and 1 for all the other things. Saving a project containing a mesh with 1 Mil poly it's really a pain, and the editing for cutting and surfacing it's also unrespponsive.

 

Want to know if there is anything I can do to optimize performances. What can be optimal hardware specs, or settings or maybe option to save locally the mesh part of the project.

Any other suggestion for conversion? Just to be sure: retopo = among other things trigs to quad conversion?

 

Of course manual retopo will be better but for a start just need time.

 

Was looking at Sculptris and C4D but didn't find this feature, Modo need to have something but hard to find.

The best tool for autoretopo, would be Zbrush 4R7, keep in mind it has a steep learning curve. Although it is a very complex program it's worth it's weight in gold.....

Will stay hold till I did find a tool for autoretopo, ZBrush it' really a cannon for just this need.

Was able to convert the mesh, transform in T-Spline and from this in solid.
Will post later the final result for suggestions, now the ultimate goal is to provide to customers the CAD model, any way to export the result in a file suitable i.e. for Solidworks or CATIA?

Erm! 

Auto topology would be cool but as I found out that is a expencive boat to get on. 

far to expencive for me to ride. 

I would rather learn how to do it manually and as @PhilProcarioJr says "maintain control." 

I must admit until reading the other threads on stl convertion I never knew topogun existed. 

That kind of function I only thought was in programs like polyworks or spaceclaim. 

Both of which I can't afford at the moment. 

But thanks to topogun and @PhilProcarioJr maybe I won't have too!

🙂 Understood about TopoGun and retopo, but this is not my concern anymore, I did know what tool to use for both auto and manual.

I reach a solid model very easily and I'm glad about it.

Did also find it's possible to export on my drive as STEP and IGES file, good.

Now starting from the attached result, very rough: they are composed from separated elements: any way to merge them?

I think they are merged ain't they. Try toggling the display view. 

Most models made from surfaces look like that. At least the three gun stock I have had redrawn in polyworks do when imported. 

What did you use to get the model in the end?

So this was a imported mesh to start with? What poly count did you have?

The original scan was about 700k poly, reduced to 300k from first optimization in the scan sw. Using GOM Inspect I did reduced it further to 100k and next around 10k polys wil 0.01mm max deviation.

Think is time to accept solution in this thread and open another one more specific.

You can mark it as solution accepted if you wish. 

It is just conversations about scanning and cad convertion are very useful to Dev teams. 

For instance what equipment did you or your clients use to.get the scan? 

You used Gom inspect to reduce poly count. Any reason for this? 

 

You see if scanning produces much higher res meshes on average then the Dev team should be aware of what we, the customers are using. 

The equipment I use when I need it is a faro v6 with a edge arm, it capture 900k piont a second on basic settings.

Using David SLS-3 scanner, pretty easily producing a cloud of milions points considering the 0.05% resolution.

 

Using GOM Inspect since after testing Meshmixer, MeshLab, Netfabb Basic I did find in general their UX not well optimized, without a specific target: no documentation of many features or inconsistent one, no multithreading optimization so heavy tasks need ages to complete, inconsistent or incomprehensible or comberstone workflow, bad UI organization and design, lack of focus on quality insurance/metrology.

 

Being in the Autodesk home I think it's not the place to plause GOM features, anyway you got the idea.

 

Also not really interested into CAD mesh editing capabilities, since there are already so many tools available. Interested a CAD can handle a mesh and apply his tools for RE.
