Measuring two points in 2D only

Anonymous

Hi Everyone,

I need to measure the height of something from one edge to another, but I need to measure the height of the part in 2D only. When I use inspect and click the two edges, it draws a straight line in 3D, 'as the crow flies'

I have attached a screen shot showing the result I get. What I am looking for is a simple straight line that shows the height of the part in 2D so the measurement would be more like 1mm. See how the line has stretched diagonally across all three dimensions to join the parts.

Thanks,

Pete.

This is annoying.

To get the delta X,Y,Z to populate, you have to [ctrl + click] each measurement node. Beware, you must be hovering over the point you want BEFORE you hit control - otherwise, you're locked onto whatever node is selected.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

That appears not to be working, when I hover over the line, which
highlights and goes black, and press ctrl+click, it just brings up the
hovering circular tool pallet thing with all the usual options, press pull,
delete, cancel, move copy etc

Will keep playing...

Pete.

That sounds like you are right-clicking.

KC, I only just saw the video. Thank you for taking the time to do this for me. it looks great, but still struggling to get it to work.

Will play a bit more and hopefully it will make sense. One of the points I am measuring to is the top of a radius, not a straight line, so maybe it is having trouble with that....

Definitely left clicking, and definitely the command key... Can't work it
out. I will try and do a screencast...

Will try and do a screencast

@I_Forge_KC: It's even more annoying. As long as you have points from lines you can just toggle between delta an no delta. Without pressing ctrl at any time:

Has something changed cause I can't get it to measure in 2D at all. Why is  this not just an option in the measure?

It depends on what you select. If you select 2 points you get XYZ option also if you select 2 circular edges. Doesn't work between points and circles, lines etc.

What @I_Forge_KC demonstrates is how to select points from a surface while show points is active.

Another method is to create a new Sketch on an appropriate plane, Project in edges and/or points that you want to measure between, and put a between them.

Yes I do that but it seems completely ridiculous. Should be able to just measure.

Instead of point-to-point, measure point-to-face. This will force the measurement normal to the face.
