mating imported components

I have the hobbyist version of fusion 360.

My existing part models were created in a full version of Inventor which I no longer have access to as I am just recently retired.

I converted my parts (.ipt) to step (.stp) files using the trial version of Inventor 2020.

I imported one file as a new base component or body.

I then imported a second file as a second component or body in an attempt to rebuild the assembly but I cannot figure out how to create any mate from one components surface to the others.

I am beginning to believe it is not possible with the Hobbyist version.

Is there a method to accomplish this?

Will I need to recreate the models in one file?
Thank you for any comment/help/assistance.

if they are both components, you can position them with a joint.

if they are still just bodies, then use "create components from bodies" to make them components first.  joints don't work on bodies.
