Materials and Appearances are a bit cumbersome

Let me start with saying that it is a bit annoying that you cannot have a design without a material. I design and then paint - I have absolutely no use for analyzing strength and whatnot. It would be perfectly fine for me to design something and then add the color "blue" to it.

Anyway, I have one design that is a simple magnet. It has the default material "ABS (White)" and I added the color "Aluminum - Satin" to it. I probably dragged the appearance over the default one so I now only have one material - "ABS (White)" and one appearance - "Aluminum - Satin". It works and is acceptable.

But I'm also trying to tidy up another design. It too have the one default material "ABS (White)" but also a few "Opaque(r,g,b)" appearances from imported designs and a few of my own. What differs from the above design is that this also have a "ABS (White)" appearance that I cannot remove. It's not assigned to anything, but it's still there. If I try to remove it by dragging something else over it, it complains about not being able to do so because it might be the default material. And this doesn't make sense as the previous design did not have the "ABS (White)" as an appearance without any problems - so it can clearly be done.

So the question is - why is it possible in one design to not have the material as an appearance, but in another design it complains if I try to remove it?

Please attach a model giving you the issue of removing materials and/or appearances.  If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section, of a forum post, to attach it.

You can specify your default material and appearance in Fusion 360 Preferences.
