material removal - beginner

Basic but I am stuck. I want to have the vertical columns with the hole not extend to the bottom. So I need to cut from the inside bottom surface up to some point. Some how this eludes me...

Observe that there are unresolved issues highlighted in your Timeline. (Run the command Ctrl b or CMD b on Mac).

I see what you did there with that sketch, in the center and then extrude/cut I imagine. Thank you. I am adapting someone else's design and I suspect the errors come from my modifications and how I did them...
