making a hole in a extruded part

Hi,

Getting pretty frustrated with this. I have drawn a shape, placed and dimensioned points on the shape where I want the holes to be and then extruded the shape. I open the hole tool, select the points and the tool tells me there is no body to found to cut or intersect. Where am I going wrong?

I don't want to have to draw a circle on every point to get a hole, but it seems to be the only thing that will work.

Thanks for any help given.

File >Export and then Attach your *.f3d file here.

Did you do a solid Extrude, or did you really do a surface Extrude?

Did you set correct direction?

I did not there was a difference. I have only just started using the software. I used to use solidworks. I will check and see.

SolidWorks is identical- solid Extrude or surface Extrude.

I'm not really sure how to tell or find out which I have done. What I did was I drew a sketch, then clicked extrude. The only options I was given in the extrude menu was to cut, join, intersect, new body or new component.

The solid tools produce a blue icon in the timeline. The surface tools produce an orange icon in the timeline. Which do you have?

File >Export and then Attach your *.f3d file here and end all doubt.

Here is the export. The holes are in this version as I have drawn circles in the sketch and excluded them from the extrusion. I would like to know for furture reference how to do it properly and hopefully faster.

OK, I am starting to take a look at this.

1. Never repeat dimensions - if you feel the need to repeat a dimension, stop and ask questions... (same as in SolidWorks)

2. Why is your sketch not in Component1?

3. Pattern features (and Mirror is a type of pattern) rather than sketch elements. (same as in SolidWorks)

You never answered my question in my original response to your post.

Q. Did  you set the correct Direction and it still failed?

...and equivalent in SolidWorks...

See answert to quwations below in red text

1. Never repeat dimensions - if you feel the need to repeat a dimension, stop and ask questions... (same as in SolidWorks) -Still new to CAD, so I'm getting the ropes of it. I will try in future to pattern features instead of repeat dimensions. I was just trying to full define the sketch.

2. Why is your sketch not in Component1? I have no idea why the sketch is not in the component. I just watched a learn basics webinar and followed them and it still comes out in its own section. I might just start again.

3. Pattern features (and Mirror is a type of pattern) rather than sketch elements. (same as in SolidWorks)

Q. Did you set the correct Direction and it still failed? Yes, I tried in both directions and it gave me the same error both times.

Thanks for the advice. I'm a notice at this, so I'm at the bottom of a learning curve.

Hmmm, works for me.

Next time Attach failure state part.  I have found over the years that there is more to learn when things don’t work as expected..

I had this same a week ago, and found the "flip" switch by accident.

I wonder if the fact that the sketch is not in the component is the problem.

I wonder if, when you select the point as the hole location, F360 is assuming you want the hole in the associated component, which in this case is the uppermost assembly, which does not contain a body to cut.

You might have to get your location points sketched in the component that contains the body you want to put holes into.

Just a hypothesis...I'm not testing it.

That was the second thing I thought (after Direction), but worked fine in my test - so I think there was some other issue going on.  But now we may never know...

The problem was that I did not have the component as the active part. I'm still not sure why the sketch was on it's own, outside of the component, but I now know how to create the part properly.
