Link component between projects

Hey.

I want to use same components in many projects. When I insert a component in an assembly from different project, fusion makes a copy from that component. This is definitely not that what I want to happen. So, how to make links between projects?

Hey @mika.takalo,

Correct, and every time you will change something in the original file, the update will propagate to all the copies.

Ok, but how to make only a linked component, not copy? I just want that timeline to be short and smooth, only those assembly things on it.

One option might be the make sub-folders under the one Project and think like that my start-up Company is a one Project.

@mika.takalo,

I think you should start with the following links. You must learn the Fusion 360 basics before you move forward!

@mika.takalo Have a folder or two for all your reuse models.

Then when you wont that component added to a different model you navigate to that component/model in the data panel then right click on the model and select insert into current design that gives you a model that is linked to the original file.

It is a linked copy not a copy so if you edit the original model all other models with that component in it will need updated what's a simple process, if you have a look in the support and learning all this is in there and what Ben said to do is correct, when you have time have a look at the links he provided they are important reading the one on RULE 1 its importaint.

Also if you don't wont a component linked any more you can right click on that component in the model and select break link.

I think you are just getting confused about the naming of things, it takes it a bit to get it worded correctly.

A model is the object you are designing a component is a part of that model there can be many components in one model and models go into files, in a component there can be all elements that make up that one part of the model, if you read trippy's rule 1 post it will help its the most read post in this forum.

The simple answer to you question is:

You CAN use linked components across different designs in the same project.

You CANNOT use line components across projects.

@mika.takalo,

You can link files between different assemblies within the same project.  What we ended up doing was create one project for our company.  Within this we have multiple folders for each different assembly and others for stock parts.

You might take a look at this post for information on one method to organize projects and files.

I think I´m soon to giving up with whole Fusion360, because everything what I´ll try to do is not possible.I have tried this quite a long and many times and always hitting my head on the wall. I know it´s different...just like Ubuntu and windows.  I would like to use more stable GUI like Ubuntu, but I just cannot because I do not get my work done with it. There must be some reason why Inventor still costs so much. If same work would be possible to make in cheaper software, who will buy the more expensive one? Fusion360 almost have all the same functions than Inventor, but usability is just like pain in the ass compared to the Inventor UI. And I still not get that why you are making Inventor LT without assembly feature? It would be just perfect without those simulation plugins etc. Inventor LT is just like taking wheels off from the car.

While using Inventor alike UI, I do not need to ask anything from anyone...

Right.

  • Inventor is too expensive for you.
  • Inventor LT doesn't have the right tool set.
  • Fusion 360 is currently clearly beyond your skill level.

If you want help you need to ask questions and associate your posts with more information, perhaps make a screencast or share your model.

While yo are struggling to compete simple tasks  we have no problems with completing our designs.

If you've come here to rant you are in the wrong place. Adjust your attitude, or leave!

Then maybe Fusion 360 is not for you. No body says that you have to use Fusion... if you feel more comfortable with Inventor, the go for it.

Put everything under the one project on a different folders, then you can have only linked parts in your assembly. Timeline looks short and nice for basic assembly.

@mika.takalo,  Would like to share this info! A new Preview is available in recent upgrade which allow use designs across different projects in Team Hubs.

Before if you wanted to reuse a design from a different project, you’d have to make a copy of that design into the current project before inserting it. Now you can take a design in a project and insert it into an entirely different one in another project.

What’s available in the Preview:

-          Ability to Insert a design from a different project

-          View design references (Uses/Used By) in Data Panel and Fusion Team UI, provided the user has access to all the dependent projects

-          Block export and share actions if the user does not access to all the dependent projects

Coming Soon in future updates:

-          Move and Copy distributed design data across projects with support for cross project references

-          Request Access to all projects that a design depends upon in one easy step.

Note that this preview is currently only available for Team hubs, so please signup a team hub to have a try, following are some links about team hubs and transfer project to team hubs

Thank you

Clark
