isolating component for editing

I am new to fusion coming from inventor. I am a little lost as to how to work in a space where all parts and assemblies share a file. Here is an example. I have a component that I made orginically. I have imported a standard fittings which I wish to modify slightly to fit by cutting some of the threads off the back.

At first I tried just making a sketch on the fitting surface and then isolated the fitting using the "objects to cut" dialoge in the extrude command. This only gave me the options "2 objects" or "autoselect". Neither of which isolated the single object I wanted to cut. (why is there even a dialoge box when it only gives you arbitrary options?)

So next I tried activating just the single fitting component I wanted to cut. This made the sketch a subsketch of this component. I thought I was really on to something here! But it still cuts the other component.

When you have two components, how can you modify one without modifying the other? This seems like a inherent issue with the CAD space being 1 space, but there must be a way to do it.

Below is a screen shot of the overlapping cut that is happening even when a single component is activated.

Just hide the component\body you don't want to cut, you can click the light bulb at any time even after starting the extrude command.
