Inconsistent orbiting behavior

Anonymous

While learning Fusion 360 I've encountered some inexplicable and very frustrating orbiting behavior when using the middle mouse button.

The first two screenshots below show a scene with four objects. One of those objects is off to the left side of the screen causing the orbit center to be between both parts (check the green point on the left). Note that this is true even when I hover my mouse above one of the objects in my viewport while orbiting.

Then, sometimes – and without me changing anything – the pivot point will be set to an object above which my cursor is hovering (see screenshots below). I did not manually set the orbit center to this object, it just happened to jump to the object that my cursor was hovering above when activating the orbit command. (Again, seemingly for no reason whatsoever.)

Could anyone explain to me the logic behind this? I have found this article in Fusion's help section but didn't find it at all helpful.

Thanks for your help!

Best regards

@Anonymous Do you have your orbit set to "Constrained Orbit" I did a quick test, and with "Free Orbit" the orbit center can jump around a bit.

Hi @Anonymous

The article is correct. There are three possible behaviors.

  • When the model is fully displayed on the screen, the orbit point is in the middle of the design.
    • This means "the middle of a bounding box around everything visible in your design"
  • If the model is partially off the screen, the orbit point is the point closest to the camera.
    • This is for when you are zoomed into a close detail. Fusion picks the closest point on the model to your screen.
  • To set a custom pivot point, right click and select Set Orbit Point.
    • If you set a custom pivot point you must use Reset Pivot to return to the above two behaviors.

If you are not seeing these behaviors (to be honest I can't tell from your description or images), it would help to make a short video using Autodesk Screencast. Here is how you can post it here in the forum.

If u want to view any object than pls point the cursor in the middle of that object than hover. So that the point would act like a pivot or axis so that u an orbit the obj how u want
