Importing DXF

I have imported a DXF and having problems pulling the parts. There is a polygon (around 15 sides) with 10 holes, one raised post and a cutout. I can pull the posts and set the height and I can pull the polygon and see the extrusion and set the height but when I finish, the polygon is gone (Ha ha) Really it disappears and all I have is the 10 holes on the xy plane.

Tried a few times. 

Not sure where to go.

The extrude defaulted to a cut operation.  Notice how the bottom of the existing bodies is missing.

Change it to join or new body depending on what you need.

If I join, all my holes get joined as well? 

Seems like I have to work with the individual DXF layers to get what I need.

Rookie question, how do you close a model and open a  new one ?
