Imported bodies to "assemblies"

So I have an imported model consisting of a few dozen parts/bodies. I'm wondering what the best practice is for converting these bodies into "assemblies" (I come from the SolidWorks way of thinking). Ultimately, I need to group several components into an "assembly" and there will be a number of assemblies, each of which hinge on each other. I've converted the bodies into components, but now I'm faced with a number of options. I could:

A) create rigid group assemblies

B) create a selection set

C) create a new component

Once I create the proper group/s I will need to create joints between them as I mentioned before. 

What is the recommended process for this type of model?
