Import New Version - Deletes Components

I have a time killing problem. I am often supplied SLDPRT or STEP files to machine. I typically bring these in and add new components to model soft jaws and fixtures. Sometimes the CAD and CAM for these fixtures is non-trivial and requires a good bit of time to create. Now, when I get a new version of the SLDPRT or STEP file and use the import new version feature, it blows away all of the additional components and associated CAM in my design. How can I avoid this?

Not sure what you can do with a design you already have but for new designs can you i insert the SLDPRT so it a linked component then if you update the linked design your design should update. You might be able to do this with the design you have, delete the component and insert the new version.
