I need help with solid/surface/form/mesh?

I need to design a machine-able part that has a contour on the top surface with radiused edges. I'm not sure how to accomplish this. Picture a wooden chair seat with a contour on the top surface to fit your butt and legs and then a radius on the front and side top corners. What tools should I use and steps should I take?
