I need help creating Maria from Metropolis in Fusion.

Hi

I have been struggling to create the Maria robot from Metropolis in Fusion.

Screenshot 2021-07-01 182254.jpg

I tried using sculpt but with bad results.

I am trying to create it using sketches and lofts but having some difficulties with that too.

I am using a canvas of Maria from the movie and using a side and front sketch of a female outline, but still struggling to get proportions. I think I have forgotten how to use sketches and lofts a fair bit.

I have added my work so far but I could really do with some help to start getting the shape and rails to work.

Kind Regards

Ian

Hi,

I am not an artist. I think that you would be best off getting the basic female form sketched

out without all of the roboty bits first. I think you are on the right track using the female side

and front sketches. The trick will be to get the proportions and measurements right. Once you

have the correct basic shape, THEN start to add the robot bits using your Maria picture, overlaid

and at the same scale.

The principle will be the same as modelling a three view aircraft. Get the basic shapes first and

then use lofts to fill in the details.

Three things about your file.

There are two yellow warnings in the timeline. Always fix these AS SOON AS THEY HAPPEN.

Your sketches are not all fully defined. I know splines are difficult to constrain and you might

get away with that but they are not impossible to constrain.

With splines - less is more. I think you have maybe three or four too many spline points. I might

be wrong on that one.

I would try to get the body right first to the shoulders. Forget the neck for now. Also forget the

girl bits on front (have to be careful not to use prohibited language on the forum 😎 ) for now.

The arms and legs will be modelled similar to Armour pieces with mechanical joints. The head will

be similar to a helmet.

Overall it will be a challenge but I think you are on the right track. Do not rely on complex sketches.

Remember that you can use the sculpting tools. Use simple sketches to create various cutting tools.

Also remember that the real Maria was a person in a robot costume so callibrate your Maria picture

so that it is the same scale as your female form. It will make modifying the basic form easier when

you get up to that bit.  Your head is right but the knees and feet are wrong. Hips are just a little out.

Good challenge, I might add it to my own practice list.

Cheers

Artistic models like characters are usually done in Blender, Zbrush or 3ds Max, using Fusion 360 might give you a decent result, but it will be exuasting and time consuming, not to mention a bit limitted.

I agree with @SaeedHamza. This is a form modeling exercise and Blender is a better tool for this, although this can be done in Fusion.

However, modeling human bodies is has it's own particular challenges and that will take a while to learn!

The question is whether you are interested in learning how to model such things, or if you are willing to work with an existing model.

You can probably find a good base model online, that can be modified to for your needs.

Edit: This would not involve any sketches whatsoever, BTW!

Hi

No one provided me with a solution.

Other than telling me it was not possible, or really hard to do, or use some other program.

I was hoping to find some one that had actually created a figure in fusion and provide some directions.

Regards

Ian

I have had a stab at it, modified your original file up top.

Will be ok if you are putting clothing on her.

Got this far, could clean up a bit.

You really have to reduce spline points in your sketches.

Might help....

Sculpting people or human shapes is very difficult since humans "Know" what looks "Correct."

You are doing a great job. I need to learn to play with forms next. That may help you.

I have a set of marionette heads to do and I probably will make the base form in fusion (they all have a style) and then use blender to fill out the mesh) and then bring it back for cam.

Because Fusion is Fussy but Blender don't care. 🙂

Hi

Wow, you did that ultra incredibly. I am truly amazed on how you did it.

I can see that you kept the sketches simple and work from horizontal sketches.

Now for me to give it a try.

Horizontal profiles, and vertical rails, would be hard without both.
