I can't find "paste new" option

As far as I know, there should be a "paste new" option which would allow me to break the link between the component and its copy, so I can modify them independently. But, for some reason, I can't find this option, no matter what I am doing and where I am clicking. Could you please Help me?

Thanks!

Hi,

After using the copy command at the browser, there should be the paste new command in the right-click menu. If not, could you let me know how you are trying to copy a component?

I had the same issue when I wanted to paste new for a component. My workaround was create a new component and then copy and paste bodies of the original component into the new component.

Yeah! That might work as well as converting the new component into a Direct Modelling component, but these are just substitutions. I want to find the "paste new" option to enhance my workflow, because sometimes it can get pretty annoying.

Thank you anyway tigertooth4!

Thank you for your response and the screencast. Do you mind sharing the design with me so that I can take a closer look?

The reason you have no paste new option in the screencast is because the component you are copying is still selected and you can't paste new back to the same component. If you click on one of the other components or the top node in the browser you can paste new to that component, also as long as a different component is active just make sure noting is select after you click copy ( just click somewhere in the work area) and paste new will be available.

i am really sorry I didn't answer. I have had a lot of trouble lately because my semester of study abroad finished. Yes, I can send you the project if you are still interested.
Thank you!

Usually the problem is you're trying to paste back into the component you copied. @dewaine50  It would be better if you make a screencast because you're doing something wrong and it will be easy to see in a screencast.

Hi,

maybe this might help:

paste newpaste new

The component can be copied by paste new to the primary or one secondary except itself .

Man it would help if you slowed down a bit so that people have time to follow what you are doing ! I know you know all and can zoom through things but that doesn't help when people are trying to learn. Thanks for very little!

where is a Autodesk rep?

Would be nice if the rep added a reason "paste new" is not in the list anymore and what may have replaced it, if any?

The command "Paste New" is still in the mouse right click menu.  Please remember it is NOT there if you have not highlighted a Component in your Browser and right clicked and selected Copy.

Thanks for the reply.

The "paste new" command is not in the list.

What has to be done is this;

        Highlight component to be used,

        Right Click and select copy.

Right click and select "paste" ("paste new" is not a selection.)

Move new component to a convenient spot.

Now go to the browser and right click on the new component link symbol and select "break link".

Now the new component can be altered as needed without changing the parent component.

Hopefully I've made this clear.

My version (the latest) has a symbol in the browser component list that looks like a broken link.

Select to break the link or make the link with other components.

Does this all sound reasonable to you?

Your reply will be appreciated.

Thanks

Yes, without your model I did not realize you were trying to Copy and Paste/New an external component (chain link in Browser).  When you have external components, the Paste New is not available since it is an external component, only Paste.  This is because the external component MUST be the same when copied.  As you have found, if you first select Break Link, on the external component, you can Copy and then Paste New since it can become a new unique component free of the external link.
