how to move a sketch center-point rectangle centered at the sketch origin

Hi everyone,

This post comes from this forum post:  moving-things-in-sketch.  In that post,  @smallfavor had asked about trouble moving a rectangle, and I was able to answer the question.  @smallfavor, helpfully, suggested that it would be good to have a place for these kinds of "little tips" to be posted, so this is somewhat of an experiment.  Usually this Tips and Tutorials section is really for more "large sized" tips.  So, let's see what the reaction to this is - if folks think that these types of tips are useful, we can all post more of them here.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This post deals with the nature of sketch geometry, how to move sketch geometry, and also the fixed point at the origin.

Have you ever place a center-point rectangle on a sketch and then been unable to move the whole rectangle afterwards?

  1. You are probably using a "center point rectangle".  This kind of rectangle has some construction geometry to help in its construction:

The good news is that this type of rectangle is actually easier to move than a two-point rectangle.  Here is a screencast showing this:

 2. the bad news is if you happened to put the center point of this rectangle on the sketch origin.  In Fusion, the sketch origin point is "fixed".  You can see the effect in this screencast below, where I just create a line with one endpoint at the origin, and the other somewhere else.  You can see that I can drag the point that is not at the origin:

3. however, you can fix this by breaking this constraint to the origin point, thereby making it easy to move this rectangle:

Hi Jeff.

I've another snag.  I've created a sketch and I need to move the whole thing a couple millimeters.  IN edit sketch I can select everything but still cannot move the group.  I'm not sure if it's a constraints issue or other.

Any clues?

It's a bit hard to tell just from the image.  But, most likely, you are correct.  You probably have some constraint that is preventing things from moving.  If you can post the design, I can probably tell you more.

Another helpful option is to turn on "fully constrained coloring":

This will color the geometry differently if it is fully constrained (cannot be moved).

That explains some issues I was having, thank you very much!

I have the reverse, i placed a retangle to the origion point, and if i dimension either side the center of the rectanle move off center. Fustrating, it takes very careful selection to get it to move, seems i place by center, the center should be fixed till i move it.

Hi,

What kind of rectangle are you talking about?
Please, show the behavior in a screencast.

I am pretty sure you are missing a Coincident sketch constraint between the center of a Center Point Rectangle and the Origin.  Take a look at the video.
