How to make basic box with tappered sides?

Hi. I'm tryint to make a box that has tappered sides (smaller top than bottom), then shell it out, and remove the bottom. It was suggested that I do create>box, then add big chamfer down each of the 4 faces. However, I found that the system won't let me make a chamfer down the entire length of a side: As soon as it touches a bottom edge, it snaps back to a non-chamfered side.

So, thought I'd try lofting. I drew a rectangle through the origin, made an offset plane, drew a smaller rectangle on that, then did a loft. The result is this:

I figure now this is a hollow box. So I tried to perform a negative extrude on the side faces, but a weird result occured: The result was that the outside surface was simply pushed in, with no thickness added.

When done, I'd like to remove the bottom (larger) rectangle. But I'm presented with some type of dependency error.

Please assist!

Thanks in advance.
