How to make a fillet go the right direction?

It seems like different edges will randomly project a fillet in different directions.  How in the world can I control it?

The current problem is a revolved object with tabs sticking out that were created from a circular pattern.  Of the 3 tabs, two fillet in the right direction one would expect, and the other goes the other way.  I've spent hours trying to find a solution, but no luck.

Any hints what I've done wrong here?  This is driving me nuts.  Note that this is on a single body.

Thanks!

hi,

you go ruler fillet

select input feature or face

then select against future from scope option ( I think your future is revolve)

click ok

ok

all the best

You'd think that would work, but it doesn't appear to do anything at all.  I've never used it before, but I can't figure out why a regular fillet works on two of the tabs and not on the 3rd.

Hi @michael55SE4,

We'd have to see the model to be certain.  When you say "goes the wrong direction", I assume you mean concave vs. convex, is that correct?  If so, then the only way that I know of for fillet to get that backwards is if the edge being filleted is not really merged with the body.  That is, the body may look like this is a concave edge, and therefore should produce a convex filet, but if some failure or mis-alignment has caused the body not to be merged at this point, that edge can actually be convex, and produce a convex fillet.

Please share the model and some screen captures of what you are seeing, and we can check it out.

only two option one is you chose side by side it means at a time you can do one axis and select next axis's

second one depend ruler fillet based on future it means extrude or revolve like this after you select fillet then you select future from history line

Thanks for your help!

I attached a screencast of the problem to this post that shows what's going on in detail.

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/fusion-360/learn-explore/caas/screencast/Main/Details/5d1d6dd...

To repeat what's on the video, the tabs are all identical.  The 15mm fillet on the left is what I want, but when I try to configure a 15mm fillet on the right the direction is down for some reason, not up like on the left.

Yes, this is almost certainly a case where the bodies are not joined.  Can you show an image of your browser, with the Bodies folder expanded.  Even better, if you can share the model here, it will be much quicker to diagnose what you are seeing.

Forget the request for the screen image.  I can see in the video that there is only one body there.  But, we do need to see the model to figure out what is going on.  So, if you could share it with me, it would help us diagnose this.

Thanks,

Jeff

There's only one body, so that can't be the problem.

I'd be happy to share the file;  how do I do that since its in the cloud?

Thanks.  Here are directions for sharing:  How-to-share-a-Fusion-360-design.

I tend to just use the local Export command, and save to my computer, choose type "archive files *.f3d", and upload the file here.  There are other options, as well, in that article

You can either right click in the browser tree (top level) and perform an export or you can share a link (unless it's in the cloud) by right click the design in the data panel and choose "Share Public LInk". Don't forget to enable "Share the latest version with anyone using this public link" and "Allow item to be downloaded"

So, I understand why the fillet is being applied like it is.  The edge of the tab does not touch the dome.  I colored one face red to highlight the difference:

I need to look closer at your sketch, but I suspect some asymmetry there is the source of the problem.

Thank you so much for looking at this.  I can see why the model as it is would cause the fillet.  Apparently when I extruded that one tab I didn't pick up all of the material fitting into the interior of the dome.

I really appreciate your help.

Hi @michael55SE4,

Here is an unfortunately long video (with audio) explaining my struggles to get this right.  I think I can fix this, but is was surprisingly hard.  The final moral of the story is to over-select the profiles, and this will make sure that you don't have this problem.  Also, making sure you have things correctly horizontal/vertical also helps...
