How to forward link (but not backward link) two copied and pasted objects?

Hello,

If I have an object I have designed, and want to make another version of it, I can copy and then paste new, and make my edits on the new body. However, if I want to make a change between both objects, maybe upstream before the 'paste new' in the project, only the original object is changed; this is understandable as I don't have a link between the objects.

Is there some way where some changes are linked, and some aren't, maybe in chronological order, separated by the time of pasting 'new'.
