How to extrude different areas of a sketch to different depths?

I am brand new to Fusion 360 (this is my first sketch) and have what I think will be an easy question to some experienced users.  I drew a sketch consisting of two primary areas that I would like to extrude to two different depths.  Essentially, the smaller area will be a milled out part of the larger area.  Creating the sketch went fine but when I try to extrude one of the areas, the other area dissappears.  What is the proper way to acheive the results I'd like?  I think maybe I needed to start with the larger area and extrude it before sketching the smaller area but I'm not sure how to get there now with everything in a single sketch.

You can use the same sketch for two separate extrusions. After you make your first extrusion you will notice the sketch disappears. You just need to go to sketches in the browser on the left of the screen and make the sketch visable again. Then you can select your profile for the second extrusion. The key in the second extrusion is that you select "join" in the opperation dropdown of the extrude dialog box.

Let me know if you need any more details or pictures.

Hope that helps.
