how to delete designs

I have two old and unused designs (one called foo and the other foo1) that are blank.  I cannot delete them, when I try I get a dialog that says "a version of this design is referenced by other drawings..."  That isn't the case however.  If I look at it at myhub.autodesk.com "USES, USED IN, and DRAWINGS" are all blank.  Why can't I delete them?

You can simply right-click -> Delete your design in the data panel. If you want to delete a project you have to right-click -> Archive it first. Than you can delete it in the web interface like shown in this screencast.

If you inserted those files into another design at some point they will be in the other design's version history even if you've removed them from the latest version(and no they will not show as used in another file). You will need to delete any file that has used those designs first.

If all you've done at some point was insert "foo" into "foo1" you'd need to delete "foo1" first then delete "foo". Have you tried deleting the files one at a time?

Mark,

I don’t think I inserted them into other designs, if I did is there any function to search to find which?  I have hundreds of designs I don’t know how I’d go about finding where...I have tried deleting them one at a time in various order and nothing works.

Thanks,

-Tom

I do in fact also have a very similar problem with a design that I downloaded to help another user.

When I open it I get the following message:

Screen Shot 2019-05-22 at 10.19.51 AM.png

Sure enough the browser lists a folder with that unresolved component with nothing in it:

Screen Shot 2019-05-22 at 10.20.51 AM.png

I can of course delete the folder, bit that still keeps that same unresolved document in this version of the design and saving it only creates a new version without it. But I still cannot delete the entire design.

When I look at the "used in" tab in the data panel it looks like it is referring to itself.

The reference might actually be to another design with the same name, but the think is that I shouldn't have been able to delete that other design.

If they were used in another design it would have to be in the same project folder, how many designs are in the same project?

@TrippyLighting  Seem to remember there was a problem if you used Save As to create a copy then inserted the copy back into the design. Think both ended up with the same IDs for objects and some odd things happened in the design. Not sure if that got fixed yet.

That is probably exactly what that user did and when before I downloaded it.

It might be fixed - I am not brave enough to try 🙂 -   so it does not happen in new designs, but the question is: how do I get rid of this design that I really don't want anymore.

Yes, how to get rid of unwanted designs...?

There should be a “force delete” that is allowed to slash and burn if it needs too.  The choice to use  and danger of can be warned in dialog(s)....

You do have the option to delete the project folder. Any designs you need can be moved first, if any will not move they have links to other designs, either current or in the version history. If a design has no current links you can make a copy to a different project using Save As. When you have all the designs you want to keep in the new project, archive the old project then delete the project from the archive folder. As for force delete, not sure that's a good idea, get enough people crying now deleting designs by mistake.

These two files exist in the project that contains the vast majority of my designs. It would take me hours to move all the design out, etc.  That just isn't practical.

The argument to not implement a feature because someone will be stupid has been discussed time and time again throughout the history of software.  The best outcome is always, as we used to say, "give the user all the rope they need to hang themselves with".  You cannot outlaw suicide.   Warning dialog(s) can prevent accidental use.  Intentional use, is well, intentional.
