I know how to use the pattern feature for sketches, and bodies.

 

What I am wanting to do is create a pattern like diamond like checkering, or knurling and project it to a contoured body. They have a "v" like groove. I know how to do closed shapes like circles, or triangles, hex etc... thats not an issues. But if I am going to sketch a custom shape then pattern it, I would like to apply it to the body following the surface contour. I thought of doing a sweep on the path, but you have to do every one if you pattern out the arc'd lines on the surface of the body. 

 

A good example would be 1911 pistol grips. What would be the best approach for this.

I have seen those, and those are technically a closed shape which isnt an issue. But if you are trying to do a stripe like pattern say at a 45 degree angle. You create lines and do a pattern but they are laying across your actual closed shape for your model body and they don't connect to the profile of the body's sketch. 

 

For example look at the pattern of lines I created. I then projected those onto the body. But they aren't closed, so I cant select areas and extrude the body to create the model I want to. 

It would take way to long to do those individually. Even creating a plane from the side, drawing a circle (or any shape) and sweeping each line as well. Thats what I am trying to figure out. How I can create a bunch of designs made from random or not so random line work and apply that to a body following the contour. 

 

The links you shared, and many others on this forum work excellent with closed shapes. I cant select these paths for the machining strategy I would like to do.

The images are somewhat helpful. What is the actual pattern you want to create, or in other word is there a profile you'd want to sweep along these lines you are showing ?

An image of something resembling the desired  end-result would be helpful.

The black grip is just lines diagonal across, the green is the traditional diamond like knurl. I have seen tutorials doing knurling on round knobs. But this is a part that is not a complete round body, I started to have issues when doing it the same sweeping my shape for the diamond. Then pattern that. was giving me problems and not cutting through all the way.

You can use the split body and sweep function to create the diamond pattern along the curve created by the split body operation.

However, that would be quite tedious, so I am trying to work out what the best way would be to approach this in a more efficient way.
