How to Create an interupted Chamfer?

My design has a need for a chamfer of limited length. I call it a relief cut. While I work on this project, there may be a need to modify this feature, so I would like it to be auditable and easily edited. My first attempt was done by using a second body as a tool to cut away the chamfer. But I do not know how to audit and then edit that feature easily in the future.

For this demo I created a component and then the ends were two additional components. Was that the only solution?

I made this file to allow everyone to see what it is, but even this example file was a challenge when I knew that I wanted to change the appearance  of the chamfered area to a different color from the two ends. So this is a second question: Can I apply a material to only one face for presentation purposes?

This is not really a chamfer, in my mind.  It is more of a Face Draft.  I did this a couple of ways.  You can split the body, or you can split the faces.  I think I prefer the split faces approach, because it leaves you with just one body.  And yes, you can apply color to only some faces.  I did not take the time to apply it to all faces, but with more split faces, you can do that.

you seem to have figured this out already, in this other thread:  angle-between-sketched-lines-on-a-design

I comprehend the split face method very well. Thanks!

Thanks @g-andresen This is just what I had in mind, but I struggled sketching the lines. This screencast was very instructive.
