How to create a contoured incision?

In the attached file (screenshot below), I've incised the letter "S" into the front face of component Sculpture by typing it on an offset plane in front of the face and then extruding it into the component with a cut.  This produces an incision with a flat bottom (parallel to the offset plane).  I'm going to be using this to receive a thin inlay (the depth will be shallower, this is just a test), however, so I'd like the bottom to follow the curved surface being extruded into, to insure the inlay will follow the curve of the surface.  How can I do that?  Ultimately, I'm going to be using a sketch rather than text, but I assume the solution will work for both.  Thanks for any tips.

Hi,

try "emboss>deboss" & "extrude from object"

Thanks.  I’m on the road for a couple of days (with just an iPad) and won’t be able to test this out until I get back, but the first half of the video looks like what I need.  The second half looks like what I already have (and what I’m trying to avoid); is there something I’m not seeing there?

I wasn't paying attention when I edited the existing extrusion, so I've now removed the action and redone it.
