How to compare strength of some materials/shapes ?

Hello,

I guess "Simulation" is the good workspace to do, but I wonder how to process :

I need to compare some behaviors under forces (essentially strength) of some combination of shapes and materials, for instance I would like to know what are the sizes of section needed to be able to handle without bending a 10 kg weight with these two shaped materials :
1) on one side an inox plain spindle
2) and on other side an aluminum hollow tube.

Say : what is the section needed for the 316 inox and what is the diameter and thickness of the aluminum tube to handle the same 10 kg ?
In others words : are this section of the 316 inox and this diameter with this thickness of the aluminum tube able to handle the same 10 kg ?

How could I do this ?

Cordially,
Guy

Steel has an elastic modulus roughly 3 times higher than aluminum. So in this case the same geometry steel is going to deflect 1/3 as much as aluminum.

If you want aluminum to deflect the same as steel, you have to change geometry. You can hand calculate a comparable geometry simply by comparing the area moment of inertia.

Here's an article I wrote some time back regarding this subject:

Hello Sean, and thanks for your Linkedin article (and subsequent Udemy courses) but you know, I'm far of an engineer, also far of a native English speaker, and even if I can understand roughly what you explain, to match my goal I need some easy tutorials showing how to do step by step...
