How to automate putting windows in many faces of an architecture?

Working with some organic looking geodesic domes and I am looking to put windows in most of the faces of the solid object.

 

I have found a good workflow where I make a sketch, give it an offset, then extrude through to make a window... But it is taking a long time and there are many windows...

 

By taking a look at the screencast is it possible to automate this or make it go any quicker?

 

For instance, can I select a bunch of faces at once and perform the same operation on them? Just looking for a way to make this easier and quicker to do!

When I edit the post it even shows it accepts the URL for the Screencast with a preview but it does not stick. Maybe I don't have enough "points" on this forum or something??

I cannot yet offer a solution but have a question. How was the original geometry created?
Was it imported as a mesh?

To answer your question about how it was generated I did indeed import a mesh.

 

I made the object in MeshMixer by importing what might be described as a "pill shaped" object. I then reduced the polygon count and then cut the pill shaped in half.

 

I then imported that into Fusion, scaled to be the right size, then extruded the bottom and applied a shell.

 

From there I am trying to add windows to most of the facets. As you may now be able to see with the Screencast I am doing this by hand. Could get very tedious of course and I am just wondering if there is anyway to automate this or simplify, etc?

 

Perhaps there is some application of the "Pattern" tool while using the "Features" as the rule but for each face instead of a grid?

 

Or, as maybe you hint at, is there a way to do this better if the mesh is created entirely in F360 instead of a few back and forthes?

 

Please let me know if I should include any more files. Thanks!

No and No!

There is a specific reason why I asked whether the geometry was imported as a triangulated mesh 😉

I would have used Blender for that. The workflow you used in Fusion 360 to create the windows basically creates what in the polygon modeling world is called an Inset. In Blender this can be automated using Geometry Nodes. Once that node network is created you can throw any triangulated mesh at it and it'll just work.

In Fusion 360 you are limited to do this manually just as you showed in the screencast.

 

The start mesh for this object was just half a IcoSphere consisting out of triangles.

The resulting mesh with windows can be exported as a .obj and imported as a mesh into Fusion 360. There you can convert the mesh directly into BRep (solid body).

Thank you so much for the thorough breakdown I really appreciate the help and feel like I understand a bit more now.

 

I will definitely take a try at the Blender workflow you noted. Thank you for the screenshots. Wild how you can use visual programming to do most of that it reminds me of the good ol' days with "Quartz Composer"! Haha

 

Really liking what you laid down with Blender though. I bet there are a bunch of other patches that could be used to do all sorts of things!

 

For future reference are there any other Autodesk products that would do this? Maybe more of a Revit or AutoCAD package? Just curious how a studio might do this for some of those crazy "freeform architecture" projects.

Resurrecting this thread as I just had a chance to finally five back into the project.

 

First of all thanks for the cool workflow in Blender again. Soooo much easier to make the wireframe look happen.

 

Though, I must say I am missing something when it comes to importing into Fusion 360. Perhaps I made too complicated of a mesh but I am unable to convert it to a solid body. I think it may not be watertight. Closer inspection makes it seem like the polygons did not come in right. See image.

 

Any idea on where to tweak the workflow so that this might work and get into Fusion 360 smoother? I feel like it's really close....

The first thing I noticed is the scale of the object is only in the 3 mm range. Scale the object in Blender and apply the scale.

Check this with the Boundary Box in the Properties.

 

I exported as .obj and can only convert it into a solid using the "faceted" option in the conversion dialogue.

The "prismatic" option, which would be preferred, requires creating face groups prior to conversion. The face group settings do not allow the creation of sensible face groups for such a mesh. It needs an option to create face groups from co-planar faces.

Hey that worked this time! Amazing! This time to option to select the mesh body was enabled and I used the "faceted" option.

 

I believe the scale is all I touched. I have attached some screenshots of the export settings for future reference.

 

Then in Fusion I was able to use the geometry to much more easily create windows and complex surfaces.

 

Will definitely be experimenting with this a bit I thank you supremely for your help @TrippyLighting
