How to align an object on an angle.

Hi

I want to align a vertical plate 10mm thick on an angle on another flat plate.

The angle the plate needs to align on is off the xy axis.

The align tool seems to only allow centering on the straight.

It would be handy for my project if I could align a base surface at two points, like the two edges of the vertical plate to two location points on the horizontal plate.

Or as you can see here, the two holes in the vertical plate with the holes in the horizontal plate.

I just cannot work out how to do this.

The easiest way I know to do this would be to create two joints on the holes to line things up. Others might know other ways.

That worked perfectly. It required me to add equivalent diameter and depth extensions to match the area it was fitting onto. But worked really well.

So thank you for that. Worked a treat.

Although I discovered that another load of parts I have to align simularily are slightly out and joint doesn't like it. I need to recheck my measurements.

The solution you provided was great, but now all of a sudden I am having 'compute failed' problem.

I am using the joint tool, but its failing to get the two location rods aligned with the insert holes.

Any advice what the 'compute failed' error is about.

With everyones help I have been able to align the uprights to the horizontal plates.

My problem now, is inserting a horizontal plate between two uprights. I have attached the f3d of the project. You will see I have a small curved plate close to the top of the frame in dark gray. I inserted this into the program from another cad program and aligned it. Unfortunately, it is under a mm short on the right hand side as you will see it doesn't contact the right upright.

I realize it would be better to actually cut the segment from the lower plate that will perfectly fit between the two uprights.and use that.

My son has suggested a method where you copy the lower plate use the plane at angle tool and segment it and hide the two segments used. It would be better to create the remaining segment as one body but if you delete the other segements the who plate disappears.

I was hoping you may be able to help with working out to creating an accurate piece.

You can create an extrusion from the top surface of the bottom plate

The last thing now I want to do is export the segment that I have made into a dxf file, so I can open it in autocad and use it as a 2d file.

I get these parts cut in aluminium and they prefer single 2d dxf's to work from.

Would you be able to advise me on how to do that?

I have reattached the project with the segment made.

Hi Ian,

here you see how it´s done.

Open the dxf and optimize the lines if necessary.

Try the Project command to create a sketch from projecting it's geometry on a plane

and then right click it to save it as dxf

The method @g-andresen is showing is definitely preferable as compared to manually projecting lines. This will avoid having double entities and construction lines projected by accident.

The last question I need to ask for the moment, is I appear to have deleted a project I had been working on whilst tidying up.

Is there a way to recover the project that has been saved online.

Or is it lost for good.

It was one I did a fair bit of work on, and would like to recover it.
