Or maybe I'm not even thinking along the right lines...

I'm wanting to take this profile and not only sweep it around the curve there, but I want to also bring it up in the Z axis towards the flat on the top left of the button.

You can create a new sketch and make an intersection curve between the two previous sketches for the sweep to follow.

Here's simple way I think it gets what you want.

1. start a sketch on the leading edge

2. Make a 3pt rectangle , or if you want it smoother you could play around with different shapes

3. extrude/cut

I tried emboss, but the multiple faces make it not worth the trouble

1. Click face

2. Delete

Thanks so much for everyone's help! Ok yeah the extrude command works just fine for this application... but let's say I wanted to make it 'extrude on an upward curve' instead of a straight line - in this case I would need to use the sweep function right? how would this work?

Ok I partially got it figured out... I created a sketch then create>project/include>project to surface. Then I did a sweep.

The problem is that now it gets hung up at this point... it won't let me select the continuation of the arc

if you want to extrude "sweep on an upward curve"  you would replace the rectangle with an arc or spline and close the profile with some other sketch lines.  this is a quick and easy way to do it.  if you wanted more control over the surface you will need to use some of the more exotic methods being discussed

Here's another way,  make an offset face, extend the edge(so the sweep path extends beyond the body),  trim the face with the sketch of your choice (this becomes your path).  plane along path,  draw your sweep profile.

Bottom line,  there is a bunch of ways to do what you want, pick your poison
