How do I get Shell comand to work on this application?

I have attached a file of a cowling for a model airplane. I had an existing file that I modified by scaling it and adding the "circle" to the top. I extruded that circle to add it to the shape. The outside of the shape came out perfect, In order to get the extrusion of the circle to form to the outside shape, I had to extrude it well into the cowl. Now that extrusion interferes with mounting the cowl as it won't allow the cowl to slide back far enough. I need to remove at minimum 6 mm of material from the inside of the extruded circle. Reducing the amount of extrusion only leaves holes on the outside.

I tried the shell command but it just sits there processing and "not responding". I must be doing it wrong!

I am at a loss on how to trim the excess in this example without disturbing the outer shell. Please tell me how to do this. Thank you for your time.

Hi! The model was originally a mesh. Then it is converted to a solid body with massive amount of tessellated triangular faces. This kind of solid body isn't operatable using traditional modeling commands.

I suggest you convert the body back to mesh. Then use the Shell command in the Mesh Design environment.

Many thanks!

Hi,

Trimming 6mm is a bit tricky as a section analysis gives this.

By the way, this yellow Warning in the timeline is a big No-no. Yellow and Red errors in the timeline should keep you

awake at night. Fix them AS SOON AS THEY HAPPEN. If you don't it may cause bigger problems later when it is too

late to fix them and you have to literally trash the design.

Ok. As you can see, the ring is flush on one side and sticks inside the cowl on the other. Maybe the way to fix this is

to trim all of it from the inside.

First thing is separate the part of the ring that sticks out from the front of the cowl as this is joining everything

together. Create an offset plane in line with the edge of the cowl and ring.

I was going to use this plane to cut the ring off but it turns out that your cowl is NOT symmetric.

The left side is lower than the right side.

I would go back and fix this. I tried going on but it became a mess.

Two suggestions. When you extrude, you can extrude to "object". I would go back in the timeline and create a

surface inside the front of the cowl. Then when you extrude you go to object and the outside will extrude the way

you want it, and the inside will go to the surface that you created. Because it will be very thin at that point, if you

want to make it thicker you can use the Press pull command just on that part.

Right now you need to fix the problems in the file before you go on.

Cheers

OK...I deleted the feature with the warning. I don't know how to "create a surface" as you suggested. I find no command to do that. I understand what your getting but don't know how to accomplish it.
