How can I define / create the side sections on this fire pit design.

Hi. I'm building a custom fire pit for a client and I was able to create the front and back, top and bottom bodies (faces) but I can't figure out how to create the sided bodies / faces.  I will fabricate it by "wrapping" thin aluminum sheet up the sides and welding it to the body but I don't know how to determine the flat pattern (blank) shape to plasma cut.  Any help will be greatly appreciated. I built this model in the solid design space.  Thanks, Scott

Fortunately this will be easy to solve.

Can you File>Export your *.f3d file to your local drive and then Attach it here to a Reply?

Frankly, from a CAD modeming perspective you should scratch this design and start over completely from scratch.

In my mechanical designs often containing hundreds to thousands of parts I very rarely use a single Move feature and I used the  Scale feature only for a very particular purpose and very, very rarely.

 

Your work would certainly deserve it!

 

Edit: I am working on a proper model to show how much less work this can be ...

I know you are absolutely correct and I will attempt to remodel the design after fabrication is complete. However, I still won't know how to figure out the dimensions of the left and right side sheet metal pieces. Do you have any suggestions? Tutorials, etc. Anything will be appreciated. Scott

I had started directly wit a sheet metal design, but then decided to approach this differently.

I looked at your forum profile and your website wasn't too far away either.

In my experience, the first thing you are interested in is not the functional end result, but you want to define the shape and proportions, the volume.

 

So that's what I've done with just 2 sketches and two extrusions. Once you have that overall shape in the right dimensions, we can use Sheet metal components to move forward. This is a much more intuitive and also much faster way to get to the end result. 

 

We use these sketches to design to the correct dimensions, so no scaling is needed.

 

We take advantage of symmetries, and only sketch half of the full profile and then mirror about the origin planes.

 

Attached is what I have so far. I'll keep developing this ...

First of all, thank you for taking the time to help me and then further for taking the time to visit my profile and website.  You articulated exactly what the priorities are for me regarding this foray into more organic forms.  Yes, overall shape, dims and volume.  I couldn't have said it better myself.  Your initial model is so efficient and gets to the core so much quicker than I could ever have with my current skill level.  I followed almost everything in your model but didn't understand the 2 points etc. on the right side. Thank you for continuing to work on this for me / with me.  I'm excited to see your next iteration.  Scott
