Hole command isn't working in drawing with parts from other drawings.

Hi all,

I've spent about an hour trying to see if anyone else has seen this, but I haven't found anything.

I added a screencast demonstrating what I am seeing.

Basically, I can use the Hole command to put a hole through a component in the drawing that I have uploaded the component to.

But in my "Main" drawing, where I am pulling all of the various components into one cohesive project, I can't seem to add a hole to anything.  I don't see the same behavior in another drawing earlier, where I added two parts from different drawings and I didn't have any problem adding holes.  But now it seems that I can't add holes to that drawing, either.

I have no idea if this is expected behavior (if so, is there a tutorial or best practices write up/video anyone can suggest for pulling multiple components together?) or if this is a settings issue (I'm guessing it's this, but I am not sure where to look).

Any chance that someone has seen this before and/or have any troubleshooting suggestions?

Respectfully,

George B.

*Disclaimer: I'm new to the CAD community, so I likely just don't know the correct terms to Google.

Hi @G-IV,

It looks like the screencast didn't get embedded- do you mind linking to the screencast instead?

As for your issue with placing a hole in your component - it sounds like you're making several components, each in one file, and then inserting them all into another file to assemble them, right? If this is the case, the reason you can't add a hole in the main design is probably because the components are linked. (This is indicated by a small chain link icon next to the component name) Basically, linked components are "locked" copies, so they reflect all changes that are made to the original component, but you can't make changes to the linked component. If you made changes to the original assembly that aren't being reflected in linked copy in the main assembly, check to see if there's an update icon, and click that to update the design. You can also break the link by right clicking on the component and selecting "Break Link." That makes it so you can directly edit the component in the main assembly, but if you make changes to the original then the unlinked copy won't change along with it.

Is that the issue you're seeing, or is it something else?

Time for a little bit of terminlogy while of are getting started. What you are working in is a Model, not a drawing. For most experienced folks around here a drawing is really a manufacturing drawing. Just google the term "manufacturing drawing " and you'll see what I mean.

Hi @kate.raskauskas,

I appreciate the info - I am definitely doing exactly what you described!

Sorry about taking so long to get back to you, I was doing some traveling so I had to put this project on hold.

Thanks for the help!!

@TrippyLighting Thanks for taking the time to correct my terminology - it's a lot easier to find what you need if you know the right words!

Regards,

George B.

I attempted to link the screencast again, in case someone else has this question and stumbles across this post.
