Help trying to extrude a slot into cylinder.

I am designing this bolt action pen that I will eventually machine on my mini lathe and I will cut the bolt slot with a milling machine with a rotary table (very important). The way the milling machine will cut the slot is in a unique way, I included a video trying to explain my problem, I need the slot to be angled because that's how I will machine it. In the video I use the freeform selection tool to try and explain how I want to model this slot.

What is different from the your previous post?  Is the slot not cut in the same fashion?

Nobody gave me a correct answer I thought if I could explain the problem better I could get a better solution.

your looking for how to do a cam follower.  you can search for that and find a bunch of post about it.  mostly involving using sheet metal as a workaround.  more recently solid sweep was introduced, which can also give you good results if you can figure out how to do the 3d sketch.  attached is an example using that method.

You would like the slot cut perpendicular to the face of the cylinder.  In other words, you want the cutting tool pointing to the center of the tube at all times.  You Accepted Solution on your other post so why is it not correct?

yes, previously I was trying to do the cut on the non 3d sketch, but when I try to do the solid sweep cut with the pin it gives me an error

Did you follow the video I posted on the previous post.  I have attached the model I provided then with axis through the slot ends to prove they are perpendicular to the face.  You can follow the time line in this model and go back to the previous video.  If you get to a problem point, attach your model for help.

I made the planes and the face offset, I don't know what to do from here, referencing your video on the other post, the left edge of your slot lines up with the top of the cylinder while my center point of the bolt aligns with the top of the cylinder, and how would I find these angle measures, would I create a sketch and use project and driven points?

The only sketch required is the body you are going to use for the Solid Sweep.  If you watched the video, you only saw me create the one sketch for the body used in the Solid Sweep.  You will find the angle of the required plane by finding the circumference of the body, divide that by 360 will give you the distance around the body per degree.  Then decide how far around the body you want the reverse slot and divide that number by the previous result will give you the angle of the Plane at Angle.  I used 60 degrees in the model of your pen I am returning.

 

I suggest that you return to the video and watch it a couple more times.  I also recommend that you start using Components because with only Bodies, you will not be able to create Assembly Joints.  Model is attached.

Attached in the video where I correct your model to create the slot cut.  Your Component Body is very thick so the cut merges with itself at the angle you use.  I demonstrate different angles in the video but I would make my component wall thinner.  I said in the video I was not going to return your model but I changed my mind.  Please correct it for yourself to learn.

I did almost exactly what you said and it sill gives me an error, I even tried making the angled plane extreme like -90 degrees, I also tried making the pin longer and shorter.

You got lazy on me and did not create the Pin Body as I did in the video.  You used your old sketch which is not in the right orientation to the model.  If you do it as I demonstrated, it works like a charm.  Up to the point of using the old sketch, you did a nice job.

thank you, I got it to work out perfectly, in the future I will probably redo the entire design, do you have any suggestions, making everything a separate component, cool features, changing ways I create bodies, etc?

Looking back to your earlier submitted models the main thing is to create Components and be sure they are activate so all Bodies, Sketches and Features fall under them.  I think you realize this now but practice it always.  You are required to have components in order to use Assembly Joints.  In version 6, of your model, you created one component and then model all the Bodies under it.  They should be separate Components.

Efficient CAD work depends a lot on your knowledge of Geometry and simple geometric calculations.  Way back, I would pick up objects and describe them in geometric terms to myself before I ever started a model.  The CAD application is the second thing you need to learn, the first is the efficient use of geometry.  Good Luck in your modeling efforts, come back to the Forum if you have questions.
