Is there a way to change the appearance (color) of grouped objects as a group, rather than one by one?

Yes, there is an option of group change you need to change the materials of that group by replacing the existing materials then you will get the desired output which you want.

Thanks Bhavesh, not sure what you mean. actually what I have is a number of identical (purchased .obj) components (lettus) and to change the color I have to do it on by one. 

I may have set this up wrong when I imported the single file and then patterned it.  I've attached a screen shot.
