Getting a 45+ degree chamfer around complex edges

I am making a cosplay weapon using foam but having trouble getting the edge of the blades to work.

have tried the chamfer using

It's a bit of a guess re: exactly what you mean by 'having trouble', but I do understand it's not working. 

 

Some thoughts: 

There are lots of small features, and discontinuities in your spline. By that, I mean there are two things that might be coming into play:

  1.  If the edge turns a corner very sharply, it's possible that you're asking the chamfer to follow an edge it just doesn't understand. My guess is that you attached the canvas, then traced it by hand. There aren't an *excessive* amount of spline control points, but probably more than you actually need. Generally, you can get by with a control point every time the curvature reverses - i.e. one for a convex section, one for a concave. Use the spline control handles to tweak. Usually, the simpler you can make splines, the better. 
  2. The actual size of the chamfer just might be too big to fit where you're asking it to. If it starts running into itself, you'll have problems. See if you can get it to function with a very small chamfer, first. It's easy to drag that feature handle out and break the chamfer fast. 
  3. You may have to do this in sections. I don't chamfer a ton, but I have had shapes where I could get one half to compute, then the other, but not both together.
