Fusion360 desktop viewer

It would be nice if F360 was somehow integrated into the file browser so you could open files straight from the browser.
Maybe just a basic viewer that opens up and allows you to view the step, iges, DXF etc, inspect/measure and give you the option to upload into your selected folder in F360.

For example as it is now if someone emails me a batch of step files even though F360 is my main CAD program and almost always open I will navigate to the folder and use Inventor, Freecad, librecad etc to go through the files, view them, inspect them and so on. Then if I want to work with one I then have to switch to F360 and upload the file.

In OS X, this would just be a Quick Look plugin. I'd almost be surprised if there weren't something like that for Windows as well.

Fusion uses A360 for our file data management.  Below is a link for the viewer.

Is there a way for me to remark as solution not provided?
My whole **** point is that if I want to look at files I shouldn't need to upload each one to view it. This is massively inconvienent in the produciton environment and at that point I would just upload them straight to F360 or myhub.
The point is that there should be a desktop integrated viewer. Preferably one that I could make the default program for opening the desired files like DXF, DWG, PDF etc that should open the file or a batch of files instantly. Then from this small desktop program there should be options where you could open the file in F360, upload it to myhub or whatever else you might want to do with it.
Sometimes I need to open 8 DXFs, look through them, pick the two that I want to upload to F360 to work with. Currently there is no convienent way to do this.

This is not going to happen within Fusion 360. Desktop viewers are not part of our vision for Fusion and would require us to load up a bunch of local translators, some of which are not available on Mac platforms. There are plenty of other third part desktop based viewers. If that is what you need I advise you look at them.

As an aside @yoshimitsuspeed. I would ask that you refrain from the veiled cursing. You can make your posts without them and its is a courtesy to other forum members.

Thanks.

To be fair to @yoshimitsuspeed - I suspect that wasn't «veiled cursing» so much as getting something that he actually said getting swapped out for asterisks by the forum (which personally I find offensive.. but not in the way you do).

Yes the forum blanked it out. I didn't realize it was such an offensive word.

"There are plenty of other third part desktop based viewers. If that is what you need I advise you look at them. "

The whole point is trying to streamline workflow.
Obviously that isn't a high priority for F360 as seems to be proven time and again.

Lets get specific and talk facts about CAD translation. A typical desktop viewer than can view Pro/E-Creo files, Solidworks files, parasolids files, DWG files, DXF Files, Inventor files, NX files and Catia files is roughly a gigabyte of translator libraries where many are Windows only. Your proposal was specific about a tiny desktop app that can view data. Typical uploads for Step, DXF and DWGs take a few minutes to upload and be viewable without having to install software. We think this was is reasonable tradeoff and streamlines the workflow. We added, based on this forums feedback, the ability to open neutral data like STEP and IGES ( DWG/DXF is comming) in tool without uploading as a further improvment to streamline workflow. I understand you don't agree that these are streamling your workflow, from your point of view.

A typical upload might take a few minutes but if I am navigating through archived folders on my desktop trying to find a particular model and open a folder that has 5 step models of various revisions it is kind of rediculous to need to upload all of them to view them in F360. It is also inconvienent to open them all up in some other viewer (or I would probably just use something like freecad) to find the file and then need to go back to F360 to upload the file you want to work with.
I'm sorry if you don't like my idea and apparently can't seem to see how this is an inconvienence  but it is not just a point of view that F360 being so far removed from your desktop is at times an inconvienence and a hindarence to workflow. This is a fact and one that many people have commented on and complained about in one way or another. Maybe my idea isn't the best but it seemed to me a very convienent and I would think quite simple way to bring F360 a little more integrated to the dektop and your local files.

Have you tried the "new design from file" in the file menu? It allows you to quickly open step files withou uploading. I am trying to find some way to bridge what we can do with what you want.

For me and my group, we get many files via email and we have to save every attachment somewhere.  Having to save the file to a folder or a desktop first - then open Fusion, then upload and then view.   If nothing else if I could drag and drop or copy from my email to F360 that I already have opened would be great.

yoshimitsuspeed,

I am in a bit of the same boat with how the work flow is conducted at my place of Business.

I see that you are still active on the forums.

I am new to Fusion ..But have been using other cad Packages for some time now.

Did you ever get a "real" answer to your Question ?

If not where you ever able to find a work around with some other [[["DESKTOP"]]]]  Viewer ?

@edLBXN6 I would suggest you start your own thread then trying to breath life into one that has been dormant for a long time. Provide as much detail as you can.

Edit: You might want to check out the Autodesk Desktop Connector.
