Fusion - Combine feature not allowing tool body selection.

Hello!

I am trying to hollow out a model of a track spike shoe to resemble a cover that can be used on the bottom of my track spikes, protecting them from wear and tear across different surfaces.

To achieve this, I took a high-definition scan of my track spike shoe and imported the file to Meshmixer to make the model into a solid body as well as repair any cracks in the model capture. I also took the opportunity to simplify the model of my shoe so that functions in Fusion would run more smoothly on my school computers, which have proven to be susceptible to crashes.

I then imported the mesh model into Fusion as an object file and adjusted its positioning so that the model was in a desired working (i.e., editing) alignment. To help the school computers with function performance, I reduced the mesh model.

After converting the mesh model to a solid body, I defined a sketch plane tangent to one side of the model and sketched the shape of the cut I wanted to make to the top of the shoe model. After extruding the sketch and cutting the model, I achieved the shape I desired to make the “cover” for the underside of my track shoe. However, the model is solid, and needs to be hollowed out so that it can be worn on the bottom of my spike shoes.

My initial approach was to take my edited (i.e., cut) model of the shoe, copy the model, scale the copy down, and then combine the copied (scaled down) model and the original model to hollow the main body of the shoe. However, when I tried to use the combine feature, I was unable to select the inner scaled-down copy as a tool body to perform the cut.

Any advice would be helpful.

For the Forum users to help you out with your model, you need to attach it to a reply post.  If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section, of a forum post, to attach it.

Fusion is not a Mesh Modelling software,

Do all of it in Meshmixer.

Fusion will choke on a scaled version of the external wall being used to combine cut when Shell should be the tool to use, but not on the converted scan.

Might help…

I agree with @davebYYPCU that this isn't a project for Fusion.

Fusion is NOT a mesh modeling tool. IT internally represents geometry as analytical and NURBS geometry, which is different from mesh geometry.

Reducing a high-resolution mesh in order to work with it in Fusion is not a good idea in the vast majority of case, because you loose detail and still, due to the highly faceted nature, problems with the native tools can appear.
