Fusion 360 Step-by-Step Tutorial

Anonymous
Not applicable

I have just started to use Fusion 360 and I have been trying the step-by-step tutorials found under the "?" menu top right.

Take for example the desk lamp design.

The tutorials......

..window cannot be re-sized

..does not have sound

...isn't very clear, too light and lacks contrast

..runs too quickly to observe and try the same actions yourself

The product looks good but the lack of instructions is a real problem.

Any alternatives?

Hey Old_Raft,

Thanks for letting us know about your experience with the step-by-step tutorials. We've made improvements on these over the last few months and with this type of feedback we can keep improving.

As an alternative, we have the "Fusion 360 Basic Training" guides that are PDFs you can download and work through. Hopefully this format better suits your needs.

Keep the feedback coming and we'll try to help with what's out there today and provide content in the future.

Hi,

I have also tried the pdf tutorials, via a second monitor attched to the one PC, this makes viewing the pdfs and training easier as you don't have to constantly swap screens or print. It's a feature of Windows worth trying.

The pdf tutorials are however poor  say  3/10.  They are not designed for a beginner, if you assume that they are a good starting point you are wrong as a lot of the terminology isn't explained well or at all.   Again the screen shots are of very poor quality and far too small.  It's obvious that they are compiled by a person experienced with Fusion 360; this is exactly what you don't want.  Compiled by a person new to the product  (Then peer reviewed)  would mean that some of the obvious mistakes would be covered especially where you click on the wrong thing and find it difficult to find your way back, or make a choice the wrong way round.   On some tutorials a few extra explanitory steps would be useful as would arrows added to the screen shots to indicte where you are intended to click.

A pity as the poor quality may well put people of a product that has amazing flexibility and scope.

One feature of Fusion 360 which would help a lot would be if the hints with a black background that appear when you make a menu choice, would stay on screen after the menu choice was made.

Hey,

I’m on a Mac so your Windows concepts are foreign to me. Smiley Happy Joking aside, we’ve done some research to try to determine users preference for tutorial layout and we’ve found that it is a personal preference and there is no one answer. That's why we have in-product and PDF. I feel that whatever we deliver, we must do it well and user feedback is critical.

We’ve heard similar feedback from other users that we need to “forget what we know” when creating these tutorials. We are trying and are working on better "essentials" material with a courseware developer. If you have specific exercises or steps that were not clear, that would help.

We have a project we are working on to include the tooltip and related information in the space below the command dialogs. We do some of that now, but we want to improve that information. One quick way you can help with that is to add an item to the Idea Station forum about your suggestion. It does have weight coming directly from users.

Again, keep the feedback coming. We are working hard on improving the learning content and experience.

Getting course content right is critical.

I understand the frustration by new users.

There is a alternative. YouTube.

Check out NYC CNC. Travis Davis, and others.

John from NYC CNC does a fusion Friday dedicated to using fusion 360!

You've made it to the Forum. That's by far the best learnig resource.

IF you direct your view to the top of the Fusion 360 Forum you'll see the "Learn" button.

That section contains videos as well as the online documentation. Afte that i'd not waste too much time with tutorials but try to design my first project.

Accept some room for failure!

Hi Steven,

Yes the tutorials were removed. We had content in the product and on the site. We felt that the content on the site delivered more to users so we've focused on that for now. You can find the learning site here: http://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/learn-training-tutorials and here: http://fusion360.autodesk.com/learning/learning.html?guid=GUID-CC9A8E39-356C-43EA-9EDD-0E9C1321E0F2

We are definitely interested in what customers find useful. Please post back with your thoughts on the content.

Just as a point of feedback, in spite of a few annoying little bugs with the in-software tutorials, I found them to be the most useful way to learn the software and become familiar with the various features. I've since referred half a dozen people to the software, and that has been the best way to encourage them to get past their fear of trying to learn it "Don't worry, there's a walkthrough that will teach you everything you need to know to get started."

The videos are well and good, but it's easy to get distracted by all the talking, or get lost in the video because it moves too fast, or feel like you're being slowed down in parts that are talking about what you already know how to do. The in-software tutorials allowed you to move at your own pace, and learn the stuff you don't know, without getting bogged down in stuff you already know. And it was easy to be able to just stop and come back to it as needed without worrying about losing your place.

The videos are great for some stuff, but I don't understand why you would just kill the tutorials that were already there. Even if you didn't bother to fix them, it would be nice to leave them there, and just take the position of, "These tutorials aren't perfect, and we're not going to focus on fixing the bugs, but it's still here for you if you want to use it."

Even if you were to bury it in the help menu. It would be nice to be able to refer people to it when they're unsure of where to start.

I'm trying to go through the video tutorials on the web almost four years after the original post in this thread, and I am finding them unusable due to many of the issues in the original (almost) four year old post in this thread.  From what I can see, it looks like they are unusable on a single monitor setup due to the limited size options on the video: 1) Too small to see and 2) Full screen, which means you can not do anything in your Fusion 360 window.  Am I missing something?  I'm working on a 27" monitor at 2560x1440.
