Fusion 360 Not Exporting as STEP (stp),

I searched the forums, and most similar posts do not seem to be the same as this problem.

Occasionally when I select Export and choose STP, the export will fail. I'm not able to reproduce the problem right now, so I can't post the error text, but this has happened to me repeatedly for months.

The flow that causes this: Choose export from the Fusion menu (doesn't happen with the computer dialog box when right clicking a component), select STP, note that it is saving to the desktop, click save. Fails there. Get a yellow warning triangle in the bottom right corner.

My old workaround was to go to the website and download the file from there, but recently I found a quicker one - if I click the "..." menu, and re-select the desktop, it will save the STP.

I figured this out because I noticed that Fusion was using a shortened version of the file path to my desktop with an abbreviated one, like "/Users/al...e/Desktop" presumably because the name was too long? I actually changed my username and file structure (I love you, Fusion) hoping it would solve this problem, but it hasn't.

I have the most up to date version of F360 and as far as I can tell this only happens on the Mac version. It really looks like a bug to me, considering how easy it is to work around it.

Hi @aspagliere,

Thank you for posting! I tested this on my Mac machine and confirmed the issue. I saw the issue only when I tried to export files as STEP and was able to work around it by the steps you described. I am not sure what is causing the issue at the moment but I have reported this to the development team for further investigation. (the ticket ID is FUS-31695 for your reference) Thank you for reporting the issue!

I know you were able to recreate this error (thank goodness!). I got it to happen again today, so I've attached a screenshot of the error dialog.

I'm embarrassed to say I submitted this in this forum because I couldn't find a support ticket page. Can you please link me to that? Or was this the correct venue?

This bug is back with the latest update!

I imagine a room full of programmers, like old school Sherlock Holmes, chewing on their pipes and saying "INTERESTING".

Thank you for reporting the issue again! Now I am unable to reproduce it anymore for some reason but the defect ticket is still active and the development team is working on this. Are you able to work around the issue by the steps you mentioned before?

Yes, it's the same, and it is reproduceable. I'm using OS X. Not tested on Windows.

Go to the menu (Fusion-level, not component context menu), select export, select STP.

White exclamation point on a yellow triangle, no dialog title.

Text: "Translator failed to export the asset as file: [file path]"

"Ok" button only.

Same workaround.

Thank you for your response and the information! I am sorry that it is taking time for us to fix the issue but as mentioned earlier, the defect ticket is still open and has not been forgotten.

Please use the workaround for now and hopefully this gets fixed soon.

I just tried this via both desktop app and via web. Both resulted in a 4kb file with nothing in it.

Really needing this fixed ASNAP!!

Can you share your design ? I import and export STEP files with Fusion 360 all the time across a wide gamut of geometry. Never had a problem with it.

Do you have valid geometry in the *.f3d file?

Attach the *.f3d file here and I will test on my computer.

I think it might have to do with file size? it's a pretty big file. I just exported a couple smaller ones & it worked fine. can I send to only you? Would rather not send to whole forum as product is not launched yet.

Someone from Autodesk will come along and take a secure look.

sure, @SEIZMICdesign  - if you want to send me a link to the design via direct message, we can take a look and see why the translation might be failing.  Thanks.
