I have a form with a paint appearance applied.  As soon as I select "Finish Form" the appearance disappears and the form changes to a gold-brown color.

When completing the T-Spline it is automatically converted to a surface model. In this case, upon auto-conversion  the surface normals are pointing towards the inside.

You can flip them with this feature:

Some general advice for T-Spline modeling:

1. Avoid triangles and N-Gons (polygons with more than 4 sides)

2. Avoid too many T-Junctions. They create 5-sided polygons. A few are OK, but don't overuse them.
