Been working on easy ways to do this....more to come later....

Here is a sample model with results. I could have done any pattern or design just chose this because it has been asked for so many times.

This took about 2 or 3 min to do.

I think I love you 🙂

Been looking for something like this to show up in Fusion 360 for quite a while. That's what I get for completely ignoring the 'Sheet Metal' tab since its arrival in F360.

"Been looking for something like this to show up in Fusion 360 for quite a while. That's what I get for completely ignoring the 'Sheet Metal' tab since its arrival in F360."

This was the whole reason I made this thread, was to show people an easy way to wrap something around a surface. The best part is it works on any surface that is not a lofted bend. Unlike the script that was posted in this thread it works on way more then just cylinders and it allows for very accurate placement and control. I wanted people that previously thought that sheet metal was  of no need to them to see the value it adds when you think outside the box.

I'm glad you found this information useful.

Cheers,

Phil

hi,

i want to create a curved pipe in F360, which precisely matches the curves in this image:

PVCPTRAP.jpg

My first idea is to draft a pipe in F360, and then conform that pipe to my image. Good plan?

First i did an edge-detect with an external tool:

handle-outlne.png

I converted the image to an SVG.

Then i inserted the SVG into F360 using "attach canvas" feature.

Then, F360 detected the main area of the shape as a face, so i dragged that out and deleted the other bits.

Then i extruded the face, but the side has many facets, instead being a smooth curve.

My buddy somehow achieved a pipe with the correct curves using Sweep on the inserted image, but it came out as two paper-thin pipes, one within the other, and not the correct width.

Now i'm stuck. I thought i could use the methods described in this thread, but not sure how.

Another idea is to grab one edge of the source-image, as a LINE. And then convert that curved-line into a pipe. No idea how to do that, tho'.

Any tips?

thx

Draw Sketch a single line that is the correct shape and use the pipe tool to make the pipe it's under the create menu

thx, but i don't want to 'draw' the line, i need a pipe of the exact shape of the imported image.

is that possible?

i thought one of these might help, but not sure how:

Please read Daniels short answer fully and perhaps explore what the pipe tool does!

yes, i read his short answer fully.

he says to draw the line.

That won't work for my scenario.

You've got to be kidding!

We know what you want.

Its really pretty deed simple and also does not involve any wrapping, unless completely misinterpreting the images you posted.

This is the second part of Daniel's message:

"and use the pipe tool to make the pipe it's under the create menu

Don't sketch it then, use the svg just unlock it then turn one section in to construction lines including the 2 end lines so you are left with a line then use the pipe tool on that sketch element, If you go through the learning it is shown in there how to use the pipe tool.

Start here https://help.autodesk.com/view/fusion360/ENU/ then have a look at the see all fusion 360 learning

Could you guys takes this to its own thread please ?

I made the terrible mistake upon the first post of this user assuming that there was actually something to been wrapped to provide a link to this thread.

Unfortunately ignoring common forum etiquette the user hijacked this thread for his own purposes that not even remotely have anything to do with this thread.

@TrippyLighting as i explained above, i believed there was something to be wrapped. I believed wrapping might be the solution to my issue-- that is, wrapping a straight pipe to a curved line. It wasn't my intention to "hijack" the thread.

thx

The tools are not in Fusion yet...well sorta not in Fusion yet...I will talk more about how I did it later.

What if you need surface details wrapped for things like hand grips...

How BOUT AN EXPLANATION OF HOW??

Unfold - sketch on unfolded surfaces - extrude - pattern - refold done.
