FEATURE REQUEST: Fusion 360 “Context Awareness Dashboard”
A unified system-state and diagnostics panel for improved transparency, usability, and error feedback
🔹 SUMMARY:
Add an optional, toggleable Context Awareness Dashboard that displays all active environment states affecting modeling, sketching, and visualization.
The dashboard should consolidate scattered system indicators—selection filters, isolate modes, history capture, body opacity, sketch diagnostics, etc.—and provide real-time messages explaining why actions succeed or fail.
Goal: reduce “silent failures” and make Fusion’s behavior instantly understandable.
🔹 PROBLEMS TODAY:
Users frequently encounter blocked or inconsistent actions with no explanation:
Can’t select items (filters active)
Commands greyed out (inactive component)
Geometry missing (isolate or visibility filters)
Semi-transparent bodies (opacity left at 30 %)
Sketches failing to extrude (open or over-constrained)
Each of these states is currently invisible unless the user hunts through multiple palettes or remembers a setting toggled hours or days earlier. This leads to unnecessary frustration, especially in large parametric projects.
🔹 PROPOSED SOLUTION:
Introduce a dockable dashboard accessible from the main toolbar or via a hotkey.
1️⃣ Global Context Summary
| Workspace | Design → Solid | — |
| Active Component | Pot_Body | Activate Root |
| Selection Filters | “Edges only” | Clear Filters |
| Visibility Mode | Isolate ON | Exit Isolate |
| Capture History | OFF | Enable |
| Body Opacity | Body 3 – 30 % | Reset to 100 % |
| Section Analysis | Active | Deactivate |
Each row updates live and offers one-click reset actions.
2️⃣ Visual-State Tracking
Tracks and reports:
Body/component opacity
Hidden or isolated objects
Section analyses or cross-sections
Visual-style overrides (Wireframe, Shaded, etc.)
3️⃣ Sketch Intelligence Panel
When a sketch is active, the dashboard expands to show real-time sketch diagnostics:
| Geometry Count | 12 lines • 4 arcs • 2 circles • 1 spline | Quick inventory |
| Constraints | 8 H/V • 6 Coincident • 3 Equal • 1 Tangent | Balance check |
| Projected References | 3 external edges | Trace dependencies |
| Fully Constrained Status | 85 % constrained (6 DOF remaining) | At-a-glance feedback |
| Errors / Warnings | “1 open profile detected” | Highlight open loop |
Messages appear in a scrollable Diagnostics Feed, e.g.:
“Item not selectable — excluded by current selection filters.”
“Sketch 14 contains 1 open profile — cannot extrude.”
“Body 3 opacity = 30 % — may affect visibility.”
🔹 BENEFITS:
Immediate feedback instead of silent failure
Dramatically reduced troubleshooting time
Cleaner, more predictable user experience
Educational value for newer users learning constraints
Lower support and forum load from “Fusion won’t let me…” issues
Sets a new UX benchmark among CAD platforms for transparency and contextual awareness
🔹 IMPLEMENTATION OPTIONS:
Docked Panel (sidebar or bottom palette)
Compact Overlay (toggleable heads-up view)
Auto-Hide Mode for minimal distraction
Color-coded status indicators (green = normal, yellow = warnings, red = blocking conditions)
🔹 TAGLINE:
Fusion 360 should tell users why something doesn’t work—not just fail silently.
