Failing to stitch together to form a surface

I do not seem to understand patching.  I am making a model that uses a component from another design.  The component forms the base of a planter.  When I 3D print, the additional base body and component are separate...even though no space is shown between bodies.

 

I tried patch because I view patch as having the capability to stitch to surfaces together.  However, as I show in the screencast, I am not able to do this.  What do i not understand?  The goal is to have a base of a planter that incorporates the component I brought in.  The base gets filled with water....

I could be wrong but it looks like your trying to stitch together solids...try switching to the model workspace and use the combine tool.

The tool you are trying to use only works on surfaces (patches).

Thank you.  I think I'm getting my head around the key difference between model and patch (thanks to you).  model = blob of clay.  Patch = surface.  The challenge I have been having I think is in the terminology.   Extending the meaning of Patch from patching something to working with a surface...versus model which directly goes to working with clay.

I think you've got it. Look closely at the object's icon. It took me a while to get that Fusion's workspaces are meant to work only on the specific type of object. Luckily, it allows you to convert objects between the different types.

 

In your case, you are working with solids. In order to use the Patch workspace, the solid must be turned into a collection of surfaces.

 

The more common case is importing a model from another program (like a Rhino .3dm) and comes in as a collection of separate surfaces that need to be 'welded' together to form a solid.
