Extrude to distance without overlapping another body

Sometimes I have to extrude a profile to min( distance, surface of a body).
It is easy when the profile is smaller to the body, I can estrude to object following its surface.

What can I do when the profile is bigger than the body ?

For example I want to extrude for a maximum of 20 mm, but make the extrusion follow the body surface without entering it.

Which is easiest way to achieve this goal ?

Just extrude "New Body".
Then combine Cut (Keep Tools).

Not exactly what I need. With combine cut I cannot 'remove' the part of the extrude which goes beyond the object.
In the first post I tried to attach a sample project to explain better what I want to achieve.

You could create an offset surface, extend it, and use it for extrude to body.

You can also use the arc of the sketch to split the body.

Thank you very much for your help, I knew it wouldn't be easy to explain exactly my ideas due to my poor technical language.

The solid on the red circle is a simplified version of what I want to do. The extrude stops at the set distance in free air, but when it intersects a solid objects it stops immediately following the contact surface. In this example I can solve with two different extrusions, but I'm looking for a general and easy procedure.
Anyway the offset surface you suggested can be handy in other cases👍
